    What’s the difference between Type A Narrow and Type A Wide flat washers?

    Type A Narrow washers are commonly called SAE washers, while Type A Wide washers are known as USS washers.

    Why doesn’t ASME B18.21.1 list separate dimensions for SAE and USS washers for certain sizes?

    For sizes smaller than ¼″ and larger than 1½″, ASME B18.21.1 gives only a single set of dimensions (it doesn’t specify “SAE” or “USS”). Instead, industry convention dictates which style applies to each range.

    Which sizes are designated SAE (Type A Narrow) vs. USS (Type A Wide) by industry convention?

    Washers from #2 up through #12 are treated as SAE (Type A Narrow) washers. Washers from 1 5/8″ up through 3″ are treated as USS (Type A Wide) washers.
